Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says the time has finally come to change his team’s formation, insisting he first needed to establish a clear identity at Old Trafford before introducing tactical flexibility.

Amorim abandoned his trademark back three for the first time in Friday’s 1–0 win over Newcastle, opting instead for a traditional back four with two holding midfielders. It marked a significant shift for a coach who once joked that not even the Pope could force him to alter his system.

Identity Before Flexibility

The Portuguese coach said his early insistence on sticking to one formation was deliberate. He explained that changing systems too soon, especially under media pressure, would have undermined his authority with the players.

“When I came here, I knew maybe I didn’t have the players to play that system well, but it was the beginning of a process,” Amorim said ahead of Tuesday’s match against Wolves. “We were building an identity. Today is a different moment.”

With United now just three points off the Champions League places and dealing with a thin squad, Amorim believes adaptation is necessary. He said the players now understand why changes are being made.

Right Moment to Evolve

Amorim rejected claims that he was ever stubborn, saying there is a right time to evolve tactically. He believes that time is when a team is performing well, not when it is struggling.

“When the media talk about changing the system all the time, I cannot do it,” he said. “The players would think I am changing because of you, and that is the end for the manager.”

He added that United will not always rely on three defenders, especially once injured players return, as the team looks to become more complete and unpredictable.

Injuries and Bruno Fernandes Update

United head into the Wolves match after just two wins in their previous eight games and will be without seven senior players. Club captain Bruno Fernandes is among those sidelined, despite pushing for a return after picking up a hamstring injury against Aston Villa on December 21.

“There is no chance he plays against Wolves. No chance,” Amorim said firmly.

However, the United boss stressed that Fernandes remains influential even from the sidelines. “He’s a leader,” Amorim said. “He’s always talking, always guiding the team. That’s why he’s the captain.”
