Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says the club will actively explore the January transfer market as injuries continue to stretch his squad at a crucial stage of the title race.
The Premier League leaders could be without as many as four defenders for Tuesday’s high-profile clash against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium. Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera all missed Saturday’s narrow win over Brighton, a result that kept Arsenal two points clear of Manchester City at the summit.
January Window Comes into Focus
Despite spending over £250 million on eight players during the summer window, Arteta said Arsenal must remain alert to opportunities to strengthen. He stressed that preparation is key, even if deals are not guaranteed.
“The window is there and we are Arsenal, so we have to look at it and ask what we need,” Arteta said. “We have to be actively looking, and then whether we can do it or not is a different story.”
The Spanish coach underlined the importance of squad depth, noting that many rival clubs operate with 24 or 25 senior players. He admitted Arsenal have suffered more injuries than expected, some of them unavoidable, but insisted availability will be decisive in the title run-in.
Villa Test Looms Large
Arsenal face a stern test against an in-form Aston Villa side that ended their 11-game unbeaten league run with a late 2–1 win earlier this month. Villa arrive in London on the back of a club-record 11 consecutive victories in all competitions and could move level on points with Arsenal with another win.
Arteta praised compatriot Unai Emery for Villa’s rise, saying their consistency and performances justify their position near the top of the table.
Motivation from Past Defeat
The Arsenal boss said his team has learned from the painful loss at Villa Park and plans to use it as motivation. He vowed that visiting teams at the Emirates would be made to suffer, pointing to Arsenal’s dominance against Brighton as the standard to maintain.
“We know it will be a tough match,” Arteta said. “The way we lost last time was cruel, but we’ve learned from it. We can use that hunger in the right way.”
