Nyamira County has taken a major step toward achieving universal access to clean and safe water following the official inauguration of the Nyamira Water and Sanitation Company (NYAWASCO) Board of Directors.

Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo on Thursday unveiled the nine-member board, mandating it to oversee water supply operations, strengthen sanitation services, and improve overall service delivery across the county.

The establishment of NYAWASCO follows Nyamira County’s separation from the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company (GWASCO), a move prompted by persistent water supply interruptions and accumulated unpaid bills that affected residents.

Addressing attendees during the ceremony, Governor Nyaribo underscored the central role of water in human development, noting that access to clean water remains a top priority for his administration. He called on the board to ensure every household in Nyamira is connected to reliable water services.

The Governor also issued a firm warning against illegal water connections, directing the board to take decisive action against offenders. He emphasized the adoption of smart water meters to curb losses, enhance billing efficiency, and strengthen revenue collection.

“To sustain the company, we must protect our revenue streams. Those stealing water must be dealt with firmly,” Governor Nyaribo stated.

He further urged the board to prioritize financial sustainability through improved revenue collection and prudent cost management. Particular emphasis was placed on reducing operational expenses, especially electricity costs, and exploring renewable energy alternatives such as solar power to ensure uninterrupted water supply.

Governor Nyaribo outlined the board’s key focus areas as expanding water connectivity, settling pending bills, enhancing customer service, and ensuring efficient governance as part of the broader goal of universal water access in the county.

Following their inauguration, the board members are scheduled to undergo a five-day induction training on best practices in water governance and operational management.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment and Water, Dr. John Matiang’i, welcomed the new board and expressed confidence in its ability to address water access challenges facing Nyamira residents.

The newly appointed NYAWASCO board members are Asenath Maobe (Finance), Richard Onyinkwa (Water), Naomi Nyaechero, Dr. Ogaro Kaunda, Dr. Carolyne Matara, James Bundi, Stephen Ouko, Joseph Arama, and Victorinah Makori.

The event was attended by several county leaders, including CECMs Dr. John Matiang’i (Water and Environment), Alice Manoti (Gender, Youth and Sports), Stephen Oboso (Lands), Kennedy Angwenyi (Public Service Management), Dr. Grace Nyamongo (Roads and Public Works), Bernard Maina (Trade), and Dr. Peris Mong’are (Agriculture), alongside Chief Officers, senior county officials, and staff.

The formation of NYAWASCO is expected to significantly improve water supply and sanitation services in Nyamira County, contributing to public health, economic growth, and sustainable development.
