Senator Esther Okenyuri has met Jane Bosibori Marando Obuchi, HSC, a celebrated writer, researcher, and teacher widely regarded as a custodian of Gusii cultural heritage.
The meeting highlighted the importance of safeguarding indigenous languages and honoring those who dedicate their lives to cultural preservation.
Jane Marando is the author of several influential works in Ekegusii. These include Endabasia Yechinkwana Chi’Ekegusii, an authoritative Ekegusii dictionary, Chingero Chi’Abagusii, Ekegusii N’ekiya, and Marando the Farmer and Other Stories. Her writings are widely used by learners, researchers, and cultural scholars.
She has also played a key role in translating global literary classics into Ekegusii. Among her notable translations are William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, published in Ekegusii as Romeo na Churieti.
She also translated Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s The River Between as Oroche Oroatanani. Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart was rendered as Binto Mbisebererekani.
